Interview Advice

If you are working with one of our consultants, he/she will assist you in your preparation for the interview.

Before the Interview

Know the job
Find out as much about the job as you can.  What are the reporting relationships of this position?  Understand the key challenges of the position and the key competencies required of the job.  You should be able to visualize yourself fitting into the role.

Know your potential employer
Research the company.  What is the company’s culture?  What business are they in?  Who are the main competitors?  What is the market trend?  What’s their market share and leadership position in their industry?  There is no reason  for not knowing in today’s information  age.

Know your interviewers
Find out about your interviewers.  Who is going to be present?  How will the interview be conducted?  What are their roles in the interview?  If possible, get a physical description of each interviewer and a brief on their personality and communication style so that there will be no surprises.

Know yourself
Know your core competencies and how you can add value to the position and your potential employer.  How do you see yourself contributing and fitting into this new role?  If you do this, you should be able to answer the question: “Why should we employ you?” which is what the interview is all about.

You should also know why you are interested  in the position.  Know how the job can add value to you in return.  How can you grow with this  job?  Why is this a good career move for you?  Why you are keen to consider a career move now?  In short, what are your push and pull factors? Employers are always keen to hire candidates who are motivated and have genuine  interest in the position.

Be ready with your own questions
Analyze the facts you have gathered above and develop effective questions to help you clarify your doubts concerning the job and the company.  Nothing is more damaging than not asking questions during the interview.  Asking questions demonstrates your interest and your thought process.

Dress appropriately
Dress appropriately for the occasion.  Acceptable dress codes differ from company to company and from country to country depending on the culture.  When in doubt, dress formally and neatly.

Be punctual
Be punctual for the meeting.  Check out the address and direction to the venue before your meeting.  Plan your route in advance and set out early.  Arrive with sufficient time to take in the environment.
